History

Cacao's story begins here — in Mesoamerica, in the humid lowland jungles of what is now Tabasco, México.

The Olmecs were the first to cultivate it, over 3,000 years ago. They didn't eat it as chocolate — they drank it, reverently, as a sacred elixir. The Maya called it kakaw and wove it into their most important ceremonies: births, marriages, offerings to the gods. The Aztecs valued cacao beans as currency and served the drink to warriors before battle and to healers before ritual.

For these civilizations, cacao wasn't an indulgence. It was medicine. It was ceremony. It was a bridge between the physical and the spiritual — a plant that opened the heart and sharpened the mind.

When cacao eventually reached Europe, sugar was added, the ceremony was stripped away, and what we know as chocolate was born. What was lost in that transformation is exactly what Naawa is bringing back.

Preparation

What you'll need:
25–40g of Naawa cacao paste, hot water or warm plant milk (oat and coconut work beautifully), a molinillo, whisk, or blender.

01 — Measure
Shave or break off 25–40g of paste. Start with 30g and find your rhythm.

02 — Warm your liquid
Heat water or plant milk to 65–70°C. Never boil.

03 — Froth
Whisk, blend, or use a molinillo until smooth and frothy.

04 — Taste first, sweeten after
Drink it pure before adding anything. If you'd like to sweeten, raw honey, coconut sugar, or dates work beautifully.

05 — Set an intention
Before your first sip — pause. This cup belongs to you.
